My research question is: Do we, as Americans, rely on technology too much? I do believe that we use technology too much and that we depend on it far more than we should. Personally, looking at my usage of technology I use it more than I realize. I use my computer and my iPhone every day. I depend on my GPS to get me where I need to go, text messages to communicate with people on a daily basis, and google to answer any questions I may have at any time I may have them. I sleep with my phone next to my bed, and it’s my morning routine to check my e-mail before getting out of bed. My gut emotion is that we are far too attached to our gadgets and what technology can provide for us, using it constantly.
I think that if Americans took the time to really look at their technology use that the majority would agree with my opinion. However, I think that there are many people that are oblivious to the fact and wouldn’t admit it. I know several people that spend lots of their time on their phone, but when you say something to them about it they deny spending that much time on their phone. I think that there are some people who are just in denial about their technology use, however, it is constant for everyone, and it’s hard to avoid. Technology is everywhere, even when we don’t realize we’re using it or seeing it, we are. I think we’re fools to think that it isn’t a huge part of our everyday lives.
I would love to research some statistics. I would like to find out how much time an American really spends using technology every day. These numbers would really help me with my question and to prove or disprove my point. I would also like to possibly interview people that I know so that I could have collected data of technology use. I am excited to do my research for this paper to help me gain better knowledge on this topic.

  1. This is a great topic. I just had a conversation about how technology taking over. I learned about a school that is trying to become completely technology based by 2016. This includes having every student have a tablet to have their books on instead of having paper books. I think that is crazy. I think there is going to be a lot of ways you can go with this topic. You have a good idea where to start with your research I would suggest looking up the down sides and heath ramifications to technology. Such as, why is it bad to rely on technology? Good luck.

  2. I would have to say I agree with you 100%. I actually did not realize how much I depend on my electronics daily until you mentioned it in your post. I also sleep with my phone under my pillow and check my email and Facebook as soon as I wake up. I listed to my music on my phone in the shower I use it for my alarm, I use it to keep track of my time every morning. I get to work and I am on my work computer everyday. I leave work and depend again on my phone to keep me company and update on what's going on around me. I get home and turn on the TV and my laptop and do my online courses and homework while I am watching TV and have my phone next to me to check my email, texts and Facebook. I only communicate with people via text I hate when they call me because I do not like to talk on my phone but I will text you all day long. It truly is sad how much we depend on our electronics to live. I know we all have done it but you know if you forgot your phone at home you would not feel the same all day like you have missed out on something all day. That's pretty bad. I look forward to seeing what your research comes up with on the statistics of electronics.

  3. i have been pondering this topic lately too, and it seems that many of us do heavily rely on technology which may not be good. It would be interesting if you could look up the statistics of how much the sales of technology such as phones and computers have risen over the past few years. Also some stuff about how much time people spend a day on their phones and such. I also think the point you brought up about all the ways we use technology and don't even take not of it is a great point. Maybe you could expand by telling of how many pieces of technology you use before you go to work, such as phone, gps, computer, car stereos, electronic lock buttons on car keys etc.
